Centipedes
What do centipedes look like?
Centipedes have many legs and a flattened, worm-like, segmented body. Each body segment has one pair of legs - the number of legs a centipede has is dependent on its exact species and size. Centipedes grow from between 1/8th and 6 inches in length, and are usually yellow to dark brown in color. Centipedes are equipped with long, sensitive antennae that they use to identify prey. The centipede’s first pair of legs ends in sharp claws, which contain the venom they use to paralyze their prey.
Are centipedes dangerous?
House centipedes are not considered to be dangerous, and typically pose no real threats to people. They do, however, have the potential to bite through the skin of a person and, while the bite is quite painful, their venom is not strong enough to cause serious health problems. Because centipedes tend to hide in dark, secluded areas of homes, have a less-than-cuddly appearance, and move quickly, they are often responsible for startling and frightening homeowners.
Where do centipedes nest?
More often than not, centipedes are found nesting outside in dark, damp environments. Typical nesting spots include underneath mulch, stones, landscaping ties, logs, fallen trees, leaf litter, and other vegetation. If centipedes have made their way inside a home or other building, they are usually found hiding out and nesting in dark, cool areas like the basement, crawl spaces, and underneath sinks.
Why do I have a centipede problem?
The areas where centipedes nest outside are often located close to the exterior of homes. It is common for centipedes to accidentally find their way inside through cracks found in the foundation or underneath basement doors. Centipedes also head indoors if the weather outside becomes too hot or dry for them to live comfortably. They will move inside and take up residence in areas of the home that mimic their outdoor environments.

- Make sure that all exterior doors, especially basement doors, have door sweeps installed.
- Place a stone or rock barrier between any mulch and your home’s foundation.
